Thomas is a recovering corporate executive. He left corporate work in 2020 to “come out of the closet” as a writer. Writing was always in his blood; his parents were academics. Thomas believes that not only do we see and interpret the world through words, but we also apply words as tools to create our experiences.

These days, Thomas splits his time between Fort Lauderdale and the town of Paraguaçu, in coffee country in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, which provides the setting and several of the characters for the Renata Cardoso Mystery series (Bamboo Tomb, Tropical Checkmate, and Arbiter of Mercy).

Thomas has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area much of his life. He went to the University of California at Berkeley. He has also lived in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Atlanta, Boston, and Hong Kong. He is married to Marilene, and they have two sons, Kevin and Gustavo.

In 2020, he published the memoir ‘Relentless—From Both Sides of the Veil.’ Relentless tells the story of Thomas’s family’s journey with the cancer of his older son, Kevin. Kevin passed in 2018, but remains a forceful presence.

In 2024, Thomas served as developmental editor for ‘Helping Fathers Heal – Grief, Hope, and Our Search for Connection.’ In February 2025, his short story ‘Phobias’ was published in Flash Fiction Magazine. And in May 2025, his short story ‘Bottom of the Glass’ was published in The Yard – Crime Blog.
